George Douglas for feature on stammering for picture post. The child who cannot join the conversation. A child with a bad defect is at a disadvantage at school. Not only is she an outcast but she is at a disadvantage in some branches of education such as reading aloud or answering questions. Nor can she whisper in class. 1951

Hattie Jacques and Freddie Mills London 1955. In 1955 Hattie was Britain’s best loved comedienne and Freddie was Britain’s sporting idol. He was world light heavyweight boxing champ from 1948 to 1950 and went on to a career in movies and TV. Here he is supposed to be Hattie’s personal trainer but she’s clearly more interested in his abs than the exercise. She could afford to joke about gym workouts. She was always a very large lady but it never interfered with her massive stage, radio and screen success as a comedy actress. She was best known for her roles in 14 of the Carry On films (especially as the Matron in Carry on Doctor) and was married to Dad’s Army star John Le Mesurier. Photograph by George Douglas
