The 82-year-old lives in a featureless apartment block in Tokuyama city, Japan - waking up every day with a very painful reminder of the past. For Kenji has endured 50 operations over the past 65 years after finding himself near to the epicentre of the Hiroshima atomic bomb. At just 17 years old on that one fateful day - 6th August 1945 - Kenji saw all of his hopes and dreams for the future blown away. Even now, over six decades later, the echoes can still be felt in his life as he, and other Hiroshima survivors, find themselves living isolated lives - shunned and sidelined from mainstream society. Such discrimination and shame meant that tens of thousands of Hiroshima survivors never got married, never had children and, in effect, never truly lived.
