According to a recently-released study by Cambridge University Press, a colony of Emperor Penguins at Halley Bay has lost more than 10,000 chicks in 2016 and hasn’t recovered. This is the second largest breeding colony and has suffered from complete breeding failure over the past three years. Why? Changing ice patterns, thinning ice and early breakup of the animals' breeding grounds are to blame. Good news though - it appears the adults are relocating. During the same three-year period, the nearby Dawson-Lambton colony, 55 km to the south, has seen a more than tenfold increase in penguin numbers. The authors associate this with immigration from the birds previously breeding at Halley Bay - an example of wildlife adapting to changing habitat.
