Yuri Gagarin, a Soviet citizen, former member of the Young Communist League, and Party member, was the first man to have travelled into space. For his outstanding services to the homeland he was awarded the title of 'Hero of the Soviet Union' with the presentation to him of the 'Order of Lenin' and the 'Gold Star Medal'.
