MYANMAR / Mon State / 2015 / Vendor with her daughter near Kyaiktiyo Pagoda. The Golden Rock is located at the top of the 1100 m high Mt. Kyaiktiyo near Kyaikto town. Besides the Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon and the Mahamuni Buddha image in Mandalay, the balancing boulder belongs to the three most important and sacred pilgrimage sites of Burmese Buddhists. According the legend, one hair of Buddha can be found in the stupa. Only men are permitted to affix gold leaf sheets on the rock.
