USA / California / San Francisco / The gold standard / 2012 / Gilt Studio / Peter Werkhoven runs this exquisite, Laurel-Heights studio where he gilds an assortment of contemporary and antique items. From intricate, Roccoco-style 18th century frames for the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam to distressed golden mirrors for local clients, everything this artisan touches literally turns to gold. With the light pouring in throughout the busy shop, and reflecting off all the warm yellow gold tones, this is a remarkable place where one gets to speak with a true master of his craft. © Leela Cyd Ross / Anzenberger

USA / California / San Francisco / The gold standard / 2012 / Gold Pedicure at Mizu / Who doesn't love a restorative mid-day spa treatment? A pedicure is an affordable luxury that will leave you feeling heavenly. This salon is very modern, with square-shaped white chairs, black river stones and a great selection of OPI, Butter and Essie nail polish. Try Butter's West End Wonderland, a glittery disco ball of a color (as pictured) or OPI's Under My Trench Coat metallic color or Charge It!, a more yellow color with real 24k gold flakes. © Leela Cyd Ross / Anzenberger

USA / California / The gold standard / 2012 / Reliquary / Tucked away on the charming Octavia street in the Hayes Valley neighborhood, Reliquary is a veritable treasure trove for the most global, stylish, bohemian set. The shop has a mix of old and new, precious and wild, hi and low, assorted goods from around the world. Layers of jewelry, clothing and home goods dot the shelves of this beloved shop. Local East-bay based designer, Marisa Haskell, showcases jewelry here made primarily of leather, beads and quite a bit of gold color. Her jewelry is affordable, on trend and dances on the line of extreme opposites: it's simultaneously bold and delicate. © Leela Cyd Ross / Anzenberger

USA / California / San Francisco / The gold standard / 2012 / The Palace Hotel / This historic hotel in downtown San Francisco will sweep you off your feet from the minute a bellman greets you, smiles handsomely then whisks you off to reception. It's hard not to trip while taking in the sumptuous garden court, with its glass ceiling, green palm trees and glamorous crystal and gold chandeliers. The gilded beau arts architectural details, sweet smells wafting from the heady bouquet of red roses in the lobby and every little golden flourish on the main floor are an layered sensory experience in itself. If the devil's in the details, this is certainly where Hades stays when venturing to San Francisco. This hotel is positively dripping in opulence and elegance. The staff is kind and attentive, the rooms are very sweet and well cared for and the Garden Court for High Tea is straight from a sparkling dream. © Leela Cyd Ross / Anzenberger

USA / California / San Francisco / The gold standard / 2012 / The City Hall / San Francisco's City Hall is a superb example of beau arts style. Its golden dome is the fifth largest in the world. Architect Arthur Brown Junior was heavily influenced by French neo classical designs in 1915, when the building was created. The surrounding trees and gardens are very prim, focusing all attention on the romantic flourishes of the building, especially the gold details dancing up the top of the dome. Go at dusk, when the light is golden and just peeking from behind the strong structure. © Leela Cyd Ross / Anzenberger

USA / California / San Francisco / The gold standard / 2012 / Napoleon Super Bakery / A frenzied line gathers at the dizzying display case of treats at the Napoleon Super Bakery in the heart of Chinatown. Get what the grandmas are ordering (they know everything!) and order a golden egg custard bun. Don't wait to sit down to eat it, lest this magic bun cool down. Fresh out of the oven, these yeasty, barely sweetened brioche-type rolls give way to a sinful, egg custard center. The whole thing is set off by a floury/sugary topping edging into the fluorescent yellow color spectrum, neon colors aside I assure you this crackly topping is critical in balancing the yin yang of the bread and oozing custard. USA / California / San Francisco / The gold standard / 2012 / Miette / Just a few doors down from Reliquary is Miette, San Francisco's sweetest pastry and candy shop. The options here are endless, from handmade salted caramels to red velvet cupcakes produced with organic flour and dairy. My favorite little morsel, however is the Caffarel Gianduia hazelnut chocolate candy from Torino Italy. With their gilded wrapper and dense, melt in your mouth texture, they are not to be missed. Miette is one of the only shops on the West coast to carry this rapturous confection, the recipe to which hasn't changed much since they were originally formulated in 1852. The array of Dianas, Holgas and Fish Eye cameras at Lomography is dizzying, but the choice is easy once you lay eyes on a golden Diana. This camera shoots 120 film and yields perfect imperfections with its light leaks, blur and romantic colors. Your pictures will be a thousand times more soft and evocative than shooting digitally. USA / California / San Francisco / The gold standard / 2012 / The Palace Hotel / The menu is stellar and the setting stupendous; it doesn't get much better than a weekend high tea with friends at The Palace Hotel's Garden Court. Served from 1-2:30 on Saturdays, be sure to book a table and prepare to revel in a tier of miniature fruit tarts, gold-leaf dusted chocolate eclairs, shortbread cookies with edible gold sparkle, freshly baked scones dotted with currants, clotted cream, rose petal jelly and Meyer lemon curd, elegant open-faced sandwiches, a generous cheese platter, an eclectic mix of loose leaf teas and of course, Champagne. A pianist tickles the keys ever so lightly and you are transported to a bygone era of decadence and leisure. Not a detail is missed during this delightful experience. This tea is one of the most artfully prepared in the world and it begs diners to slow down, sip, nibble, and enjoy a special afternoon. When the clock strikes 4 pm, find a comfy spot for a nap and just pray you don't turn into a pumpkin! © Leela Cyd Ross / Anzenberger

USA / California / San Francisco / The gold standard / 2012 / Lomography Store / Why not document your time in San Francisco with a lomo camera? The array of Dianas, Holgas and Fish Eye cameras at Lomography is dizzying, but the choice is easy once you lay eyes on a golden Diana. This camera shoots 120 film and yields perfect imperfections with its light leaks, blur and romantic colors. Your pictures will be a thousand times more soft and evocative than shooting digitally. This medium is akin to a memory or a dream. And as a fashion accessory, the golden Diana makes a killer statement! Everyone will smile when you photograph them. They can't help it.

Prepare to have your mind blown! © Leela Cyd Ross / Anzenberger

USA / California / San Francisco / The gold standard / 2012 / The Palace Hotel / The two best words in the English language are 'room service.' Start the day properly with a golden cream waffle in bed served on a warm plate, bien sur, accompanied by fresh raspberries, dark maple syrup, plenty of steaming coffee and a strawberry banana smoothie for good measure. This is a meal you'll want to blow kisses at, the kind of good morning vittles that makes you grateful to wake up with the sun.

USA / California / San Francisco / The gold standard / 2012 / Gold Street / One of San Francisco's tiny alleys situated not far from Chinatown is Gold Street. During the days of the gold rush, this is the row where you'd come to have your gold assayed to determine the quality of your treasure. Now this street is home to an Italian language institute, a few jazz clubs and antique art galleries, but you can feel the history of this cobblestone row of dreams. © Leela Cyd Ross / Anzenberger
