Underwater lessons with Duncan Goodhew at the bottom of a swimming pool. Film scan and underwater, hence grain and some light distortion. A classroom with a difference was set up for some underwater reading lessons with Duncan Goodhew at the bottom of a swimming pool in Burgess Hill. Olympic Gold Medal swimmer Goodhew is dyslexic and was promoting a reading help scheme for kids. The Old School desk was held down by weights and the camera was in a specially constructed plastic case pushed into the water by burly swimming pool attendants. The swimmers just held their breath and sank.

BURGH ISLAND scan of b/print. Shepherd John Stanesby was resuming the old tradition of taking his sheep over a half mile causeway to graze on Burgh Island in Devon, which is cut off by the tide and only passable twice a day. Until John revived the use of the island pasture, sheep had not been taken over for 50 years. Used in the Observer in 1990.

The classic Punch and Judy with Jermaine B. Jermaine Briffa was just four when he provided a small but enthusiastic audience as the Brighton Punch and Judy man set up, ready for the school holidays. The child was so engrossed in his one-to-one conversation with Mr Punch, he ignored Roger Bamber bearing down on him with an 18mm lens.The picture was used by the Guardian to mark the start of the summer holiday season in 1992 and went on to win several awards. It was part of Bamber's portfolio when he won Ilford Press Photographer of the Year for 1992 and was used for the Ilford poster campaign 'That's The Way To Do It!' Ten years later, Jermaine's mother wrote to the Guardian to say that the picture had come to mean something very special to her. She said: 'Shortly after the picture was taken Jermaine was taken ill with encephalitis. He was in hospital for a further three weeks whilst he re-learnt how to eat,drink,talk and walk. The following seven years have been a constant battle for Jermaine against severe migraine attacks and epilepsy but throughout all if this he has always tried his best. He is now 12 years old getting on 20!I am writing as a very proud mother; proud that my son has coped so well with his illness and proud that he is in such an emotional photograph.

Silent Order... These 22 monks had recorded a plainchant meditation CD to raise money to restore their 125 year old monastery of St Hugh's Charterhouse in Sussex. After being invited into their Vespers service late at night, only five minutes were allocated to take the photograph of the praying monks, including lighting the dark chapel. There were just 450 Carthusian monks at the time of this picture...worldwide....and 28 of them lived in St Hugh's Charter-house, Parkminster, the only Carthusian monastery in Britain. . In 1998 the Parkminster monks made a foray into the outside world. They decided to break their 900-year silence to share something of their hidden lives by recording an album of their Night Office chants, In the Silence of the Word. The Night Office consists of chanting and prayers which last from midnight to 3am, every night.

Dartmoor Prison inmates and staff were coached by Glyndebourne Opera Company for their own production of 'The Transformation' to be staged in the prison. Darren Colling, a prisoner, was rehearsing his role as a robot, watched by Prison Warder Colin Anderson who also had a singing role. 1990s.

Performer and choreographer Charlie Morrisey in the bowler hat, with his dance troupe of male and female dancers in business suits in the sea at Brighton. They were performing ' Knee High, Skin Deep at low tide to an audience sitting on the beach. The town, (this is before it became a City) had a lively culture of street theatre at that time and often saw live performances on the beach.

World altitude attempt in a microlite over the Gower Peninsula. Rod Jenkins took to the skies over the Gower Peninsula in South Wales as a dry run for his attempt on the Microlite altitude record, which then, in October 1989, stood at 30,000ft. Photographing him from the back of another microlite was rather like sitting on a flying lawnmower and changing films resulted in the wind grabbing the second roll and unreeling it all, leaving 36 frames exposed and fluttering in the slipstream. Courage in flight.

A sports day at St Dunstan's home for the war blind in the 1960s. Former SAS Capt Jack Fulling is the lead runner, he was blinded in 1948 in Malaya. He and the other runners are running towards the sound of the megaphone.

Stacked up sheep wearing recycled castoff woolly jumpers. This was part of a funny feature about an eccentric farmer keeping his newly shorn animals warm in an unseasonably cold summer in the 1980s.

Picture by Roger Bamber : 1977 : Calstock Viaduct over a misty River Tamar, Cornwall, UK. The viaduct carries trains over the River Tamar between Devon and Cornwall, and the picture was taken at 6am with the mist still lying on the river.

Dramatic photograph of a shipwreck at Brighton, 1980. The Athina B, a Greek cargo ship, ran aground on the beach just east of the Palace Pier, in front of the Aquarium on January 21 1980. She was declared a write-off and remained on the beach for a month before an enormous crowd watched her being re-floated to the music of a brass band and and towed away to a Medway scrapyard, near Rainham. The ship's anchor can still be seen on the seafront by the Pier.

The Carthusian monastery of St Hugh's Charterhouse in Cowfold, West Sussex, was originally built to house up to 250 monks. When I visited in 1994 there were only 23 monks in the religious community although their numbers have risen a bit now. All of them, novices and the abbot alike, glide serenely along on bicycles for trips round the cloisters from their cells to prayer and work. The monastery is so vast, covering a 240 acre site, that bikes are the most practical way for the brothers to get around it.

In December 2002 the walkway connecting the concert hall of Brighton's West Pier to the shore end collapsed into the sea.

A policewoman weeps at the funeral of WPC Jane Arbuthnott in December 1983. The Provisional IRA bombed Harrods department store in Knightsbridge on 17 December 1983. Six people died, three police officers and three bystanders and 90 were injured. Arbuthnott was 22 years old.

Amish Children in Conewango Valley, New York State, USA, in 1989. Only 300 miles north of New York City the Amish children were being struck down by a whooping cough epidemic. The Amish, who shun modern drugs and vaccines, were treating the children with lemon juice and honey and three babies died, becoming the first whooping cough fatalities in America for three years. The Amish normally shun cameras as well so this picture was taken from a distance on a 30mm lens. One little girl couldn't resist peeping at what was going on. Published in the Mail on Sunday in January 1989.

Mrs Thatcher getting her hands dirty. She was in Cornwall on a May 1983 election tour and plunged her hands into a pile of straw for some TV cameras, expecting to grasp wholesome wheat. Instead she found it was a bit of loose straw on top of a steaming pile of dung. 'You can't use that, she said to the photographers. But we did.

Dick Kingshott commuting to work in Newhaven East Sussex in a Sinclair C5 electric car. It was one of the few on the road after the flop of its launch in 1985. He shrugged off comments from passers by, smug in the knowledge that it cost him only 20p per week to charge his battery. July 1990.

The Pantomime cow was on the cliff looking over the channel to France as part of a protest against the suffering of the live cattle and sheep crammed into lorries and ferries for export.

Kent, England Britain UK. 3 April 1986. David Leipuik the last hop stringer in England to work on stilts in the old way towers above the hop garden at the Museum of Kent Life at Cobtree near Maidstone. He is stringing supports for a crop of Fuggles hops which will be picked for a beer festival in six months. He uses 8000ft of coconut fibre to string the garden.

Professional and Collections specialist Nigel Imi examines a miniature Missal Prayer Book,'Le Petit Paroissien' in the Rare book section of the new library. Almost all the power and heating in the Eco friendly High Tech building is drawn from the sun hitting the main south facing window. The building opens on 3 March 2005 on World Book Day.
